Account Management

Q: What are custom accounts?

A: As we'll never be able to support every service available on the internet, we've added the ability to add custom accounts. For these you specify the service name and your username and the account then acts like any other account in idlasso (in the sense it appears on cards, you can use feeds from the service etc). We'll endeavor to add native support for popular services so get in touch if there's one you'd like to see

Q: Why do I have to enter passwords for some services?

A: We communicate with services via an API where possible. Some services use basic authentication to check user authorisation on their API and these services therefore require the user to enter their passwords. We want to make it 110% clear we do not store these passwords and consequently have to ask for them on some occassions (big thumbs up here to services like Flickr and Facebook that use a session based API call system). If we do have to ask for a password rest assured it sent over a secure connection.

Q: That's great your thinking of security but it's a real pain typing in passwords each time

A. You can ask your browser to remember the password so you will only need to type it in the first time. For all subsequent requests the password will be filled in by your browser. This makes the site efficient to use whilst maintaining your security.

Q: I don't understand the verification of accounts, can you explain it?

A: When we add accounts we try to verify that they can only be yours (a verified account). If an error occurs during verification or you decide not to allow idlasso to connect to your data on the 3rd party site then the account is added as unverified (ie it can be verified but hasn't been so far). Verification is not possible on all services so we add these accounts as unverifiable. We are working to make all accounts verifiable.

Q: I can't verify account x, any idea why?

A: For some services we rely on an API to authorise your account. If the 3rd party website is experiencing problems then we may not be able to verify your account at that time. Simply try again later.

Search

Q: I've just created my profile but can't find myself in the search results. Why not?

A: It can take upto 24 hours for your profile to make it into the search engine. However if is possible to force an immediate update. To do this click your username whilst logged in, uncheck the search box and click update. Then recheck the box and click update again. This will force an immediate update of your profile in our search engine.

Q: What are the default search permissions?

A: By default a random user can search for your username and name. Friends can search over more of your account data (but not all data as not everything is exposed to search). To fine control who can access what data click the search permissions link on the user details, accounts or feeds/pages screens.

Q: Are there any advanced search features?

A: Yes, you can search for a specific user account on a specific service using the syntax servicename:username, for example:

flickr:georgio_1999
(assuming that user has allowed you to search over that account). You can find a list of the accounts and the string to use for searching on our supported accounts page
